Why do Ubiquiti systems use both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks?
2.4GHz and 5GHz are wireless bands which are used by all your WiFi devices – from computers, phones and tablets through to garage door openers and baby-monitors. Each band has pros and cons, so the option of both gives you flexibility:
- 2.4GHz is very crowded nowadays which means your connection may drop and data can be slow to upload and download. However, it’s much more efficient over longer ranges and travels easily through walls and other solid objects – so good for larger sites with multiple buildings
- 5GHz isn’t as congested so it can transmit large amounts of data at speed. However, its range is smaller and it has more difficulty penetrating walls and solid objects. It’s the best WiFi frequency to make use of inside your house or office
